Birmingham crash: woman dies following collision with 'stolen' Audi being chased by police

A woman has died in a collision with a suspected stolen car being pursued by police in Birmingham.

Five others were injured in the collision - four of whom were travelling in a black Audi A3 and were arrested at the scene by West Midlands Police.

The vehicle was spotted by officers on a routine patrol and a police check indicated it had been stolen.

As officers pursued the vehicle, the Audi lost control and struck a couple driving in the opposite direction at around 8.20pm on Sunday evening.

The woman from the third party vehicle - believed to be a grey VW - was pronounced dead shortly after the collision with the A3 on Sunday at 8.20pm on Kingstanding Road.

BirminghamLive is reporting that onlookers came to the scene following the crash, where they tried to help the dying woman.

A man in the same car as the fatally-injured woman sustained "serious injuries" in the crash, said the West Midlands Ambulance Service.

John Evans, who lives nearby, said: "When I heard it, it must have been when they hit the fence.

"They came through the fence and I looked up and the car comes flying through the air and it must have clipped a wall and then dropped down.

"The one car was smashed against the two lampposts. It must have been doing some speed because it just ripped my fence out."

Resident Mary Wilson, 70, said: "There was a horrendous screech of tyres and a huge bang.

"My son ran outside because it sounded like a house had come down and there was just metal and glass all over the road.

"The Audi must have been coming down here like a rocket.

"It's a built up residential area down here and you just wonder if they wouldn't have driven like maniacs if the police weren't chasing them."

The four arrested after the crash were also taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital to receive treatment for their injuries.

Police shut the road to carry out collision reconstruction and forensic enquiries to take place - but it has since reopened.

Officers have referred the incident to the force's Professional Standards Department and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), as is routine when someone dies following a police operation.

An appeal for witnesses has been put out, and anyone with information about the collision can contact West Midlands Police on 101, quoting log 2493 of 29/07/18.
