Bouncers are acting as modern-day gangsters in the mould of the infamous Kray twins, a senior police officer warned yesterday.

Doormen are involved in drug trafficking and violence at bars and nightclubs throughout Britain, said Chief Superintendent Brian Mackenzie, president of the Superintendents' Association.

He called for stricter controls on bouncers and the introduction of a licensing system. He said that criminals were evading local-authority registration schemes by hiding behind consultancies.
