A nine-year-old boy was feared to have lost both legs after being struck by a train last night.

The youngster had been playing with a group of five friends, including his brother, when he fell under a freight train near Kenfig Hill on the main Paddington to Swansea line in South Wales.

British Transport Police said he was struck and left critically hurt with severe leg and abdominal injuries; the crew of the train was unaware the boy had been struck. His friends saw the accident and ran to get help. A doctor, firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene and the boy was flown by helicopter to Morriston Hospital, Swansea, where he underwent emergency surgery.
