General Sir John Hackett, the last surviving senior British officer from the infamous Battle of Arnhem, portrayed in the film A Bridge Too Far, died yesterday, aged 86.
Sir John, who went on to become Commander-in-Chief of the British Army of the Rhine, died at his home in Coberley, Gloucestershire. After leaving the Army in 1968, he became the Principal of King's College, London, and wrote a number of books, including The Third World War. He was a leading modern military historian.
