POLICE WERE searching for a 10-year-old boy last night who is thought to be Britain's youngest fugitive. He failed to answer a summons to appear before magistrates in Banbury, Oxfordshire.

He was due to appear at the youth court accused of assault, attempted robbery and possession of an offensive weapon. Police said: "The magistrates have issued a warrant for the arrest of this 10-year-old ... the search will extend to other parts of Britain and abroad if necessary."

An 11-year-old has become one of the youngest people in Britain to be put on the Sex Offenders' Register after he admitted a sex attack on a two-year-old girl. The boy, from Edinburgh, pleaded guilty to one charge of indecent assault. He carried out the assault at a house in the Gateshead area of Tyneside in August.
