German troops will face tighter controls, including possible random off-duty checks, in an effort to eradicate right-wing behaviour from the ranks, the military's highest-ranking officer announced.
The plan to increase controls is part of the military's efforts to repair its image after a homemade video surfaced last month showing soldiers giving the Hitler salute and talking of killing Jews. Another video disclosed this summer showed soldiers from the same infantry battalion acting out war crimes. Hartmut Bagger, inspector-general of the Bundeswehr, said a working group of experts will develop concepts of tighter controls of troops next week as a result of the video scandal. AP - Berlin
