THE XETRA DAX index ended down 15.93 points at 5,196.93 as a weak start on Wall Street erased earlier gains spurred by encouraging economic growth data and a jump in Deutsche Telekom. Dealers also said attention would remain on Yugoslavia amid reports that a peace deal was close to being agreed.
Karstadt, the German retailer, climbed 5.2 per cent after the group said its four-month operating profit was on target.
