THE XETRA DAX broke through the psychologically-important 5,000 point barrier on confirmation of talks between Deutsche Bank and Bankers Trust.

The blue-chip index jumped 2.30 per cent to close at 5,024.51 points, the first time it has risen above 5,000 in 11 weeks. Dresdner Bank rose by more than 5 per cent, while Commerzbank and HypoVereinsbank also made big gains.
