NEW YORK'S strength and an array of strong company developments ended a six-day losing streak and Footsie rose 118.3 points to 5,888.5; supporting shares also advanced. Trading was heavy with turnover topping 1.2 billion shares.
BT was the star, surging 101.5p to 1,009.5p on a surprising jump in third-quarter sales, overshadowing a profits fall, and giving a sharp boost to other telecom shares - with Colt Telecom up 85p at 1,133p.
Whitbread, after a meeting with a City institution, fell 37.5p to 869p.
