SHARES ENDED their losing run, with Footsie recovering 68.3 points to close at 6,085 in heavy trading. Supporting indices were also back in the black. Share turnover topped 1.3 billion, with fund managers adjusting positions before the end of their first quarter and investors jockeying to accommodate the end of the tax year.

British Energy jumped almost 12 per cent to 595.5p as HSBC lifted profit forecasts and Warburg Dillon Read set a 750p target price.
