THE MARKET closed lower after a see-saw session dominated by political events in the US and Russia. The FTSE 100 finished 35.2 off at 6,343.1; the FTSE 250 closed 43.1 down at 5,806.9 and the Small Cap lost 4,6 to finish at 2581.8.

Blue chips were unsettled by the sacking of the Russian prime minister and the retirement of the US Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin. However, the losses were reduced late in the afternoon thanks to a resilient performance on Wall Street.
