LEADING SHARES ended well below the day's best levels as weakness in the oil sector offset gains in telecom and bank shares. The FTSE 100 closed up 14.4 points, or 0.23 per cent, at 6,383.9, having been as high as 6,434.4. Losses on Wall Street, where the Dow fell 49 points by the close of the UK market, added to London's cautious mood.
BP Amoco - the market's biggest stock with a weighting of 9.2 per cent - dropped 4.2 per cent, wiping some 25 points off the index.
