THE FTSE 100 closed higher for the third successive session, propelled by strong gains in Vodafone AirTouch. Analysts said Vodafone shares were recovering from recent concerns the group might bid for Mannesmann in response to the German group's offer for mobile phone rival Orange nearly two weeks ago.
With Vodafone rising 6.1 per cent and contributing about 26 points, the UK blue chip index rose 28.3 points, or 0.5 per cent, to finish at 6,284.0.
