FOOTSIE'S winning run came to an abrupt halt as a little profit- taking and uncertain overseas markets took their toll. The index fell 47.5 points to 4,990.1, although supporting shares managed to make modest headway.

The placing of leisure group Granada's 6.5 per cent stake in BSkyB dominated a busy session. Takeover hopes support the SmithKline Beecham drugs group, with the shares up 24p to 640p, as hopes of a merger with American Home Products were revived.
