THE HALF-POINT base-rate cut had already been discounted and Footsie plunged 143.1 points to 5,479.8 as profit takers snatched their rewards in heavy trading. Supporting shares were also weak.

British Airways fell on profit downgrades ahead of interims on Monday: the shares gave up 29p to 413p. Engineer Siebe, off 31.75p at 213p, was also hit by analysts' caution. Boots was the best-performing blue chip, up 82p to 948p as half-time results came in ahead of most expectations.
