Around the World's Markets: LONDON
BLUE CHIPS closed modestly lower after a see-sawing session dominated by the US market. The FTSE-100 index swung in a 147-point arc, ending 19.1 down at 6,533.1. Overnight strength in the Dow triggered an early rally, which helped the blue-chip index to break its intra-day record. A weak opening on Wall Street triggered selling which wiped out the morning gains. Second-liners fared better, with the FTSE-250 ending up 37.9 at 5887.5 and the Small Cap up 13.8 at 2583.8.
