SHARES CLOSED at a record as strength in the airline and technology sectors drove the market closer to the 10,000 level. Dealers expected the index to break the barrier early in today's session, only missing out yesterday due to thin trading.

The Dow closed up 82.42 points at 9,958.77, having set an intra-day high of 9,969.87. The Nasdaq Composite was up 49.92 points at 2,431.45, and the S&P 500 was also at a closing high of 1,319.20, up 15.4 points.
