THE DOW JONES index climbed 158 points to 9,980, just 20 points off the 10,000 mark by mid-afternoon, boosted by a rising technology sector, with IBM the top gaining component.

The Nasdaq gained 30 points to 2,449, as Amazon.com gained 8 per cent after the online book seller unveiled plans for an Internet auction service, and Intel rose 2 per cent on reports the cost of the year 2000 for the world's largest chipmaker would be 30 per cent less than forecast.
