THE DOW JONES closed a volatile session in higher territory after reversing intraday losses, while the Nasdaq continued to sell off amid concerns over earnings and general profit-taking, led by a fall in Sun Microsystems.

The Dow, in its fifth consecutive record-setting session, closed up 31.18 at 10,493.89, having traded between 10,519-10,387 during the session. The Nasdaq was down 39.34 at 2,482.43, while the S&P 500 index was down 4.10 at 1,318.75.
