THE DOW Jones Industrial Average rose by 72.01 points , or 0.7 per cent, to 10,651.86 around midday, led upwards chiefly by retailers after a report showed consumer spending on the rise.

WalMart added 15/8 to $46. JC Penney jumped 13/8 to 513/8. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell by 13.8 to 2,418.60.

Internet sector shares fell for the third successive day, led by America Online, down 27/16 at $1071/2 and Yahoo! down 31/2 at $139, and Amazon.com down 41/8 at $1081/16.
