US STOCKS were mixed as investors placed bets before a flood of second-quarter earnings reports that are likely to show profits growing at the fastest pace in almost two years.

The Dow Jones industrial Average ended up 7.28, or 0.1 per cent at 11,200.98, a new record. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index fell 4.18, or 0.3 per cent, to 1399.10. The Nasdaq lost 2.40, or 0.1 per cent, to 2790.67. Eight stocks declined for every seven that gained on the NYSE.
