THE BENCHMARK Dow Jones index ended up 43 at 11,079, boosted by gains amid hi-tech and oil stocks. Oil majors Arco, Exxon and Mobil benefited from the continuing rise in oil prices, while tech stocks gained as several analysts uprated leading Internet companies on hopes that a rise in computer memory-chip prices indicated a higher demand for personal computers.

"It's still a market that's aimless at this point," one trader said. "You really have a vacuum of pure economic news."
