THE DOW closed down 63.96 at 10,737.46, after a turbulent session as investors closed out positions before the quarterly expiration of futures and options.

The advent of Hurricane Floyd in the New York area prompted many traders to pack up early, with DLJ, Morgan Stanley, Lehman Bros and other banks operating just skeleton crews. But, as other major exchanges closed, the NYSE insisted on staying open, with Nasdaq and the ASE following suit.
