THE STANDARD & Poor's 500 and Nasdaq indices rose as Internet stocks, including America Online, took the lead in a mixed market. Internet stocks are "the one area that people can feel confident about growth," said one analyst.
The S&P 500 rose 2.93, or 0.2 per cent, to 1,310.51. The Nasdaq gained 37.06, or 1.3 per cent, to 2,858.16. The Dow Jones fell 74.40, or 0.7 per cent, to 10,524.07, with Union Carbide contributing most to the decline.
