MICROSOFT AND other computer-related shares lifted the Nasdaq to a record, while concern about profit shortfalls at Merck & Co sent the Dow lower.
The Nasdaq composite index rose 15.67, or 0.8 per cent, to 2,050.42. The Dow Jones fell 18.79, or 0.21 per cent, to close at 9,009.19. Merck & Co accounted for the entire loss.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 2.11 to 1,183.49. Oil companies rallied, led by Chevron and Royal Dutch Petroleum.
