US STOCKS finished the week with modest losses on Friday, dragged down by more selling of bank shares. Financial stocks were punished again on exposure to emerging markets, especially Latin America.

Programme trading led to an unpredictable final hour, helping the Dow back from a 186-point slump to end down 41.97 points at 7,640.25 in trading of 782 million shares. The New York Stock Exchange is closed on Monday for Labor Day.
