STOCKS WERE broadly lower at midday, with the Dow down 22 points at 10,502, nearing levels analysts said could indicate the market was in danger of a more serious downturn.

All summer analysts have complained about the market being stuck in a tight range. Yesterday morning it tested the lowest levels of that range. Technical analysts said the low to watch for the Dow is 10,466, the 27 May close; yesterday morning it touched 10,444.
