BLUE CHIPS scored modest gains and smaller stocks rallied as the market ended a turbulent week on a calmer note. Investors appeared to shrug off the gloomy outlook for earnings.

The Dow swung in a narrow range in a session dominated by options expiries before closing up 21.89 points at 7,895.66, up about 100 points on the week. The Nasdaq composite advanced 17.52 points, or 1.06 per cent, to 1,663.77. The S&P500 rose 1.22 points to 1,020.09.
