THE PENDULUM swung back on Wall Street, with the Dow posting its second-biggest points gain in history a day after one of its worst declines. Buyers waded back in on the heaviest day of trading ever on the New York exchange: volume exceeded 1.2 billion shares.

The Dow ended up 288.36 points, or 3.82 per cent, at 7,827.43. The Nasdaq composite saw its largest one-day points rise of 75.84 points, or 5.06 per cent, to 1,575.09. The S&P500 added 36.98 points, 3.86 per cent, to 994.26.
