STOCKS came off slightly as the market consolidated its record- breaking performance earlier in the week. The CAC-40 index fell 1.01 per cent to close at 4,289.56 and traders said the market was jittery.

Fears of another fall in the oil price weighed on the market, dragging Total down 3.29 per cent to 120.4 euros. Shares in Elf fell 3.15 per cent to close at 141.3 euros. These were offset by good news from Wall Street, including upbeat US unemployment figures, which softened fears of a US rate cut.
