THE NIKKEI 225 index rose to a six-week high as Wall Street's rally on Monday night eased concerns that exporters' earnings would be hurt by Brazil's currency devaluation and slower global growth.

The Nikkei rose 173 points, or 1.2 per cent, to 14,382, with Honda Motor, Toyota Motor and Pioneer Electronic accounting for a seventh of the index's gain. Honda, which depends on US sales for more than one-third of its revenue, rose 2.7 per cent, while Pioneer, which makes car stereos, compact- disc players and karaoke machines, rose 3 per cent.
