LEADING SHARES made modest gains as investors were heartened by Wall Street's steadiness overnight and by the halt to the yen's advance against the dollar. The Nikkei-225 closed up 34.06 points or 0.19 per cent at 17,860.09.
Market attention was fixed on the release of TDK Corp's group earnings for April-June just before the close. The electronic components maker said profits fell 15 per cent, beating analysts' expectations. Its shares jumped 3.36 per cent to end at a record high.
