THE TOKYO market closed slightly lower, down 22.78 at 13,820.68 anticipating more failures in the banking system.

Sentiment was also influenced by poor first-half figures from Hitachi and Toshiba. Hitachi fell 13 to 595 yen.

Heavyweight new issue NTT DoCoMo rose 70,000 to 4.27m yen.
