US STOCKS slumped on growing fears about the financial health of Latin America after a Colombian devaluation and a slide in regional share markets. Bank shares, already under pressure from Russian exposure, were hardest hit.
Blue chips staged a last-minute recovery, but the Dow ended down 100.15 points, or 1.29 per cent, at 7,682.22. The Nasdaq composite fell 20.99 points, 1.32 per cent, to 1,571.86. Trading was heavy at 879 million shares.
