Robert Chote, economics correspondent of the Independent and the Independent on Sunday, was named Young Financial Journalist of the Year. The judges cited the maturity, judgement and technical competence of his writing, vital ingredients of the Independent's 'particularly strong economics team'.
Senior Financial Journalist of the Year was John Plender, broadcaster and leader writer on the Financial Times. The Mail on Sunday was named Financial Journal of the Year.
Ian Ross, industrial correspondent of ITN's Channel 4 News, was Broadcasting Financial Journalist of the Year, while the best single financial programme of the year was Sky Television's Gatt: The Big Deal, whose executive producer was Rob Beynon.
The awards were launched in 1970 in memory of Harold Wincott, a Financial Times journalist who died 25 years ago.
