BG doubles millennium staff levels
BG, WHICH runs the country's gas-pipeline network, said it planned to double the number of staff on duty over the millennium to cope with any emergencies caused by the Y2K computer bug. There will be 1,600 staff on standby to tackle gas leaks or failures in the system.
The news came as BG reported a 33 per cent fall in second-quarter profits to pounds 151m because of warmer weather and legal payments. However, BG said that cheaper gas prices had resulted in a 5 per cent rise in volumes while it was earning an extra pounds 240m a year by beating the efficiency targets set by the gas regulator as part of its latest price controls.
