DID Eve Pollard, the deposed editor of the Sunday Express, know that she was about to fall? I think the answer is yes. On 5 July when I - in a previous incarnation before taking on the Bunhill mantle - was summoned to her office to be dismissed myself, her sign off was as follows: 'I'm sure it will happen to me one day, darling.'
But her departure seems to have pleased everyone. On the day it was announced, United Newspaper shares rose 8p - against the general sentiment for newspaper stocks.
The same day, most of the staff at the Sunday Express gathered to rejoice and celebrate. The party, I am reliably informed, was an all-day affair. It started at 12 noon and continued until . . . well apparently it's still continuing.
