Bunhill: If the glass slipper fits. . .
EAT YOUR HEART OUT, Dame Edna - you've been outdone in sheer extravagance. Or was it you who gave the film-makers the idea in the first place? The film is The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, about two drag artists and a transvestite camping their way through the Outback. It already shows signs of becoming the cult hit of the year, having even wowed the super-sophisticated audiences at the Cannes Film Festival.
The film's symbol is the splendid giant stiletto shoe that is perched on top of Priscilla, the off-the-road bus that gives the film its name. So it was natural for the American distributors to seize on the symbol as a publicity gimmick. They also dreamed up key rings featuring the heel. But without a doubt it is the resplendent glittering shoe that is the star. Indeed, three have already been appropriated from the offices of the Sindy, spirited away by would- be rhinestone cowboys.
