Tomorrow one of these distinguished-looking men will announce the latest news of the Channel tunnel while the other will be looking down (or up) with some interest. Sir Alistair Morton, Eurotunnel's embattled chairman, bears a striking resemblance to an earlier railway tycoon, the much- feared Commodore Vanderbilt, who switched into railroads after having made a fortune in shipping. The Commodore had the reputation of being a rather careful man with money. When, on his deathbed, a doctor recommended he have some champagne, he countered: 'Won't soda water do just as well?'
