George Staple, the Serious Fraud Office chief, may be miffed about Asil Nadir's flight but he is no stranger to the intricacies of the extradition laws. In the mid-70s Staple - then a prominent solicitor - acted for Jim Slater, who was fighting an attempt by the Singapore authorities to extradite him to face questions over share deals in the Far East. Staple helped Slater win his legal battle and avoid a far from pleasurable journey to Singapore.
