VSEL's Cammell Laird shipyard closed last night, ending 165 years of shipbuilding on the Mersey. When the last 300 production workers finished their final shift, they left behind 25 maintenance and security staff at a yard that once employed 40,000 people and built 1,400 ships. Talks with Amec, the engineering and construction group, are now off and the future of the site has not been decided. Photograph: Craig Easton
