The release of John Lewis' Christmas advert, featuring Monty the Penguin's quest to find a mate, set social media alight last week as viewers wept over or derided the sentimental TV ad.

The department store, which spent £7 million on the ad, has raised the stakes for retailers' Christmas promos in recent years.

Marks & Spencer won plaudits for its Follow the Fairies ad last week and Tesco debuted its offering during ITV's Downton Abbey last night.

The bulk of Christmas advertising begins in November as shoppers' thoughts turn to festive spending and the supermarkets begin to vie for customers' vital big Christmas shop spend.

Here, business reporter Alex Lawson looks at the Christmas adverts from Tesco, Asda, Lidl and Boots and picks the ad he thinks will charm shoppers the most this season.
