Outlook: The Association of British Insurers has great faith in non-executive directors.
Today it recommends they be given more power to clip the wings of the alpha male executives (and they are still nearly all males), particularly when it comes to dampening macho enthusiasm for takeovers. This is wise, but only works if the Neds are bright enough, and well enough briefed, to take an informed view. Given that decent ones are in such short supply, I fear this may not always be the case.
