Customers use more cards
Credit used by customers to buy goods in stores jumped by nearly a third to £893m in December, according to the Finance and Leasing Association. With an increase of 40 per cent, store cards showed the strongest growth, but this was largely owing to more people taking out cards.
"If anything, average balances were lower than would have been expected in the run-up to Christmas," the FLA said.
