EDDIE GEORGE, the Governor of the Bank of England, has accepted an invitation to visit the north-east of England "as soon as it is practicable".
The announcement comes a week after the row which erupted when he was quoted as saying that job losses in the North were a price worth paying for controlling inflation. He later explained that he did not mean job losses in the North were desirable but that monetary policy can only be set for the economy as a whole. Last month he addressed the Trades Union Congress conference.
