An unexpectedly large rise in US industrial production last month set back hopes that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates at its 26 September policy meeting. Share and bond prices were both lower at midday in New York. Production jumped 1.1 per cent in August, and its year-on- year growth rose to 3.2 per cent.
