New York: Talk of interest rates being lifted again at the end of this month failed to dampen shares, and by early afternoon the Dow Jones Average was up 23.23 points at 3,875.15.

Tokyo: Ahead of US trade figures the Nikkei 225 eased 96.65 at 19,519.46.

Hong Kong: Continuing fears of an increase in US interest rates sent the Hang Seng index plummeting 253.13 to 7,683.25.

Bombay: A liquidity crisis depressed the BSe index 62.11 to 3,756.62.

Sydney: A continuing fall in the market saw the All Ordinaries down 1.8 points at 1,867.7.

Amsterdam: A recovery in the bond market lifted the AEX index 0.49 at 415.17.

Zurich: The SMI index gained 9.2 points to 2,622.3.

Frankfurt: The DAX index shed 8.56 to 2,053.92.

Paris: Short-covering boosted the CAC-40 14.87 to 1,886.4.
