The National Remote Sensing Centre has set up a new company, Cropsense, to provide European crop forecasts for commodities traders based on analysis of satellite pictures. The company is a joint venture with the US company, Cropcast, which currently provides the same service for customers in America.

In the US, Cropcast's final production forecasts are available months in advance of the US government's year-end figures and, on average, are accurate to within 2 to 3 per cent of the figures issued by the US Department of Agriculture.
