THE ROVER Group is collaborating with doctors to apply car design technology to hip surgery. The company has used its rapid prototyping systems, normally used for creating 3D models of car components, to produce a model of a hip from in situ scans of the joint. This will help doctors at Walsgrave Hospital in Coventry in planning hip operations. There are plans to apply the technique to complex fractures and deformities of mouth and jaw.
