Chase Manhattan hired James Downing as head of European mergers and acquisitions. Downing was a man- aging director at Lehman Brothers in corporate finance. He will be based in London.

Chase has been building its advisory group over the past few years. The largest bank in the US hired David Cohen from SG Warburg as managing director in its global M&A group last September.
